The most successful British heavy bomber, the Lancaster had 4 engines, a crew of 7, and an unprecedented payload capacity.
This very plane carried huge 9988-pound deep penetration «Grand Slam» bombs, 5448-pound «Tellboy» bombs and bombs designed to destroy dams. From 1942 to 1945, the Lancaster was the Royal Air Force’s main weapon and was used extensively in the strategic bombing offensive against Germany. In the Battle of the Ruhr, for example.
By the end of the war, around 7,300 had been built.
